Kurt Winkelmann, HHEI advisory board chair, talks about the mission of the Heller-Hurwicz Economics Institute at the inaugural event on February 9, 2011.
The Heller-Hurwicz Economics Institute is a top academic priority for the University of Minnesota.
The Institute will build on the University's already stellar faculty in the Department of Economics and will help recruit the most talented graduate students from around the world to advance breakthrough research in economics.
HHEI will bring global leaders in the field to engage with our faculty and students in discourse and deliberation, and to invite the larger community to participate in the dynamic exchange of current economic thought.
These prestigious endowed chairs and professorships will be used to recruit top tier faculty to the University of Minnesota Department of Economics. Awards may also be used to retain distinguished faculty, providing supplementary income to existing salary and funds for research support.
HHEI fellowships will be used to either recruit the best graduate students to the University of Minnesota, or will be used as dissertation fellowships for the most promising graduate students.
Visiting scholars will work with Minnesota faculty and students on specific research, creating a dynamic culture that continuously generates fresh thinking in economic theory and practice.
HHEI will involve undergraduate students with research topics aligned with the mission of the institute, providing unparalleled opportunities for gifted students interested in solving pressing economic issues.
The director is a high-level, intellectual leader; an economist who manages all aspects of the Institute, organizes HHEI forums and other outreach programs, coordinates visiting scholars, and teaches.
Annual Policy Forum: An academic conference will focus on key policy issues that need to be addressed on a global scale. This conference is designed to advance emerging theories, push the boundaries of economic theory and open new possibilities in the face of pressing problems.
Roundtable Discussions: Roundtable discussions will feature economic experts in their respective fields and will highlight important policy issues central to HHEI's mission.
